Uzbekistan will be allocated $100 million to improve perinatal care

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide a loan to Uzbekistan to improve perinatal health services for pregnant women and their newborns.

According to the ADB press service, the comprehensive perinatal care project will help the government modernize about 230 perinatal centers throughout the country. They will be equipped with modern energy-efficient medical equipment, as well as improved medical staff capacity, working to updated clinical standards and protocols, which are equipped with modern quality assurance mechanisms.

The project will also improve the perinatal referral system and expand access to appropriate and timely life-saving care by strengthening emergency response teams and introducing electronic patient records for early detection of health risks and pregnancy monitoring.

“ADB support will also help the government implement targeted awareness-raising and behavior change interventions, as well as train midwives and nurses to encourage pregnant women and mothers to seek health services,” said ADB Country Director for Uzbekistan Kanokpan Lao-Araya.

It is noted that although maternal mortality in Uzbekistan has decreased from 38 deaths per 100 thousand live births in 2010 to 30 deaths per 100 thousand live births in 2020, it remains high compared to the average for Europe and Central Asia. At the same time, despite the fact that neonatal mortality rates in Uzbekistan improved earlier, in recent years they have increased against the backdrop of rising birth rates.
